Suha Jarrar

"Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; mercy and truth go before Your face." Psalm 89:14

It must be most parent’s nightmare to bury their child. But the only thing that could be worse is being unable to mourn or bury your child because you are unjustly imprisoned and no-one will allow you any freedom.

Suha Jarrar, a 30-year-old activist was found dead in her apartment in Ramallah on Monday morning. The death was unexpected and is unexplained.

She was our friend and partner in the campaign for justice and peace and we will miss her hugely.

Her mother, Khalida, also an activist and campaigner is serving 24 months in an Israeli prison after a trial in a military court. She has faced a lifetime of harassment and intimidation at the hands of the State of Israel.

Following the tragic death of her daughter, there is a campaign to free Khalida. Please will you help. More details can be found at (alhaq.org)

As we mourn the death of a dear friend and fellow activist we are calling on our international supporters to help us secure the freedom of her mother, who is currently imprisoned and being denied the right to attend the funeral of her daughter.

On 11 July 2021, Suha Jarrar, 30 years old, a senior legal researcher and advocacy officer with Al-Haq human rights organization and daughter of Gassan and Khalida Jarrar, was unexpectedly found dead in her apartment in Ramallah.

Suha was committed to defending human rights and gender justice, and advocating for international environmental law and protection. Before joining Al-Haq, Suha worked as a Climate Change and Gender Officer at the Union of Agricultural Work Committees, as Consultant at the UN Women and as a Program Development and Fundraising Manager at Ma’an – the Forum of Arab Women’s Organizations in the Naqab.

Suha had been one of the main speakers to all our delegations, According to our evaluation and feedback of each trip; Suha has been one of the most inspiring speakers that was a must-visit. We at Holy Land Trust are deeply saddened for the loss of Suha, she will be very missed.

Suha’s mother, Khalida Jarrar, is a Palestinian civil society leader, lawmaker, and human rights activist who calls for women’s rights and for the realization of Palestinians’ rights. Khalida Jarrar has been constantly and systematically harassed and targeted by the Israeli occupying authorities for her human rights work.

Khalida Jarrar was initially detained on 31 October 2019, when 12 Israeli military vehicles surrounded her house in Al-Bireh, and around 20-armed Israeli Occupying Forces raided the house at approximately 3:00 am. On 1 March 2021, Ofer military court sentenced Khalida to 24 months in prison and a NIS 4,000 fine. Khalida is currently held at Damon prison, serving a two-year sentence and is due to be released this coming September.

Palestinian activists and rights groups have called on Israeli authorities to release Khalida Jarrar, a Palestinian legislator serving a prison term, so that she can attend her daughter’s funeral.

Israeli prison services reportedly denied on Monday the request for Jarrar, a political prisoner, to attend the funeral, according to Palestinian activists and Israeli media.
We are asking you to join the campaign and ask to FREE KHALIDA JARRAR, and to create pressure on the Israeli regime’s prison administration should release Khalida as soon as possible so that she can exercise her most fundamental human rights.
